trying to study for my tech license but idk where to even start

so ive been wanting to get into ham radio for a while now and my buddy finally convinced me to just go for the technician test. problem is i have no idea how to actually study for it. i downloaded some app but it just throws questions at me and i dont really understand why the answers are what they are, like i can memorize stuff but i feel like im just gonna forget it all by test day

is there like a good book or something that explains things before you start doing practice questions? or do most people just grind the question pool and hope for the best. also how long did it take you guys to feel ready, i work full time so i dont have a ton of time to dedicate to this

honestly the question pool method works fine for most people and thats probably the most common way folks pass. the pool is public so everything on the actual test comes from it, no surprises. but if you want to actually understand whats going on i'd point you toward the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, its the one most elmers recommend and it walks through the concepts before hitting you with questions. its not super long or technical either so dont let the idea of a textbook put you off.

for timeline it really depends, some people knock it out in a week or two of casual studying, others take a month. if you can do like 20-30 minutes a day on hamtestonline or the hamstudy.org site and track your score going up, youll have a feel for when youre ready. hamstudy is free too which is nice. once youre consistently hitting 85 percent or above on practice tests youre probably good to go find a local exam session.

i was in the exact same spot like four months ago lol. i just used hamstudy.org the whole time and passed, took me maybe three weeks studying on my lunch break. some of the electrical stuff was confusing but theres videos on youtube that explain ohms law and stuff pretty quick. dont overthink it
