using DXwatch and cluster spots on phone - am i doing this right

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now (general) and just starting to get into chasing DX a little bit. someone at my club mentioned DXwatch and i've been poking around on it but honestly im not totally sure im reading the spots correctly or even setting it up to filter the right bands.

like right now i just see a wall of spots and half of them are from like 30 seconds ago and half are from 3 hours ago and i cant tell if a station is actually still on the air or if the spot is just old. is there a way to filter by time or do people just kind of know to ignore the old ones? also i saw there was a QRZ logbook thing and an app called DX Toolkit or something like that, do people actually use those or is there something better for mobile

sorry if this is a dumb question, still figuring all this out

not a dumb question at all, the cluster stuff is genuinely confusing at first. for DXwatch yeah the old spots are just kinda noise, most people mentally filter anything older than maybe 5-10 minutes especially on HF where conditions change fast. there's usually a filter option somewhere on the page to limit by time or by band, look for a settings or filter link near the top of the spot table.

for phone apps i've been pretty happy with DX Alarm, it lets you set up alerts for specific callsigns or DXCC entities so you dont have to stare at the cluster all day. i also use the HamAlert website which ties into a bunch of different spot sources and can push notifications to your phone. QRZ's logbook is fine for logging but i wouldn't really use it for real-time cluster chasing, it's more of a after-the-fact thing. give HamAlert a look, it's free and once you get the filters set up it's pretty solid

yeah what he said about HamAlert is spot on, that thing changed how i chase DX honestly. one thing i'd add - when you're first starting out dont get too hung up on the cluster and just work whatever you hear. the cluster is great but you can also get into the habit of only calling spotted stations and missing stuff that's right there on the band that nobody's spotted yet. happened to me a lot early on
