finally cracked a pileup after months of failing - what actually worked

so ive been chasing T32 for like three months and every time i try to work a rare one i just get buried. tried calling on frequency, tried zero beat, tried split - just nothing. my signal isnt weak, im running 500w into a 4el yagi on 20m so its not a power issue.

what finally worked was listening way longer before transmitting. sounds obvious but i really wasnt doing it. i was hearing the DX station come back to someone and immediately throwing my call in, but by then the operator had already moved to a different spot in the pileup and i was fighting everyone who thought the same thing i did.

the other thing that helped was listening to where the DX is actually pulling calls from. some ops work strictly by region, some by suffix, some just seem random. once you figure out the pattern you can time it way better. also stopped calling every single tx cycle and started being more selective, like waiting a beat longer before keying up.

anyway curious what techniques others have found actually work vs stuff that sounds good in theory. the split thing still confuses me a bit - like how do you know where to transmit when they just say UP?

the UP thing took me a while too. when they say UP or UP 5 or whatever, theyre listening on a range above their tx frequency, not one fixed spot. so if theyre on 14.025 and say UP 5, theyre sweeping somewhere around 14.030 to maybe 14.035 give or take depending on the op. trick is you dont want to be where everyone else is piling up which is usually right at that first announced split frequency.

what i do is listen to where theyre actually responding from. if you hear them pull a call and you can roughly tell it was higher or lower in the split, slide toward there. some ops also shift their listening window over time to work different parts of the pile, so dont just plant yourself somewhere and call forever. move around a little, like 1 or 2 kHz at a time, listen first then transmit once or twice and move if nothing happens.

also the timing thing you mentioned is huge. the guys who blast away every single cycle just become noise to the DX op. a sharp call once at the right moment beats hammering away every 30 seconds.

honestly the best thing i ever did was get on the DXpedition side for a small one a few years back, just a semi-rare island nothing crazy, and actually operating the pile taught me more than any guide. from the receiving end you really notice who the smart callers are and its almost never the loudest signal. its the one who times their call right, gives a clean callsign, and doesnt just key up constantly.

one thing that annoys operators more than anything is tail-ending, like calling while the previous contact is still being finished. and a lot of people do it without realizing. the op hasnt even logged the last guy and theres already a wall of noise. also partial calls are really underrated - if the dx comes back with a partial like "november x-ray" and thats not you, just stay quiet. the amount of people who call anyway is unreal and it just slows everything down.

for what its worth on the split question - i usually start about 2 up and just listen a full cycle before i ever transmit. gets me a feel for whats happening before i add to the chaos
