using DXwatch and QRZ spotting together - am i doing this right?

so ive been trying to get into DX chasing a bit more seriously and someone at the club mentioned i should be watching the cluster spots more closely. i've been using DXwatch in one browser tab and then cross referencing on QRZ to look up the station info but honestly im not sure if thats just redundant or if theres a smarter way to do it.

like on DXwatch i can see the spots coming in real time which is cool but sometimes i'll tune to the frequency and theres nothing there, the spot is already like 10 minutes old. i guess that makes sense but it still feels like im always a few minutes behind. is there a way to filter the spots so im only seeing things from the last couple minutes? i found some filter options but i dont fully understand what all of them do.

also is there an app that kind of combines all this stuff together? ive seen people mention Ham Radio Deluxe and a few others but i dont know if thats overkill for what im trying to do. just want to catch some new ones on HF without going crazy with software

yeah the 10 minute old spot problem is real, especially on the more popular bands. what i do is set DXwatch to refresh every 60 seconds and i filter by band so im not drowning in 40m spots when im on 17m. there's a little gear icon or filter dropdown depending on which version youre looking at. you can set a max spot age too, i usually do 5 minutes max and that cuts out a lot of the stale ones.

the QRZ lookup thing you're doing actually makes sense though, i still do that for rare ones just to double check the entity and see if someones already logged it in their log. not redundant at all really. some people use the DX Toolkit app on their phone alongside whatever theyre running on the desktop and that works pretty well for a quick sanity check when youre running between the shack and the kitchen or whatever. HRD is pretty full featured but yeah it might be more than you need right now, maybe try just getting comfortable with the cluster first and see if you actually need rig control and logging integrated before committing to all that

im kind of in the same boat as you, just got my general a few months ago and started messing with DX spots. one thing that helped me was the ARRL's DX bulletin that comes out weekly, gives you an idea of whats actually active so when you see a spot pop up you already know if its something worth dropping everything for.

i downloaded an app called DX Toolbox i think? or maybe it was just DX something, cant remember exactly but it had a gray line map which i thought was just a neat toy at first but actually helps you understand when a path might be open. still figuring all this out honestly
