jumped on a net last night and felt totally lost - some questions

so i finally got my technician license about three weeks ago and ive been listening to the local 2m repeater net on tuesday nights just to get a feel for things. last night i actually checked in for the first time and honestly it was kind of overwhelming even though i knew it would be simple. the net control called for check-ins and i gave my callsign and that was fine but then later there was this whole thing where people were passing traffic and someone asked if there were any comments or announcements and i had no idea if i was supposed to say something or just wait. i ended up just listening.

my main questions are like -- when is it okay to jump in during a net? is there a standard way to ask net control if you can make an announcement? and also someone after the net was over keyed up and just started talking to another guy without any kind of formal anything, is that normal or were they technically doing something wrong? i dont want to step on people or come across as rude when i dont even know the rules yet

oh man i remember feeling exactly the same way my first few nets, you're definitely not alone. the short version is that most of the time you just wait for net control to open it up for announcements -- they'll usually say something like "are there any announcements or comments for the net" and that's your window. if you want to make sure you get in there just say your callsign clearly and wait for NCS to acknowledge you before saying your piece. dont try to squeeze in between other people, just be patient and NCS will get to you.

as for those two guys chatting after the net closed, that's totally normal and actually really common. once net control says the net is closed the repeater is just a repeater again and anybody can use it like normal. a lot of times the regulars stick around and ragchew for a while, it's kind of a social thing. you should jump in sometime, most folks on club nets are genuinely happy to talk to newer hams

yeah what he said. also don't stress too much about messing up, net control on a local club net has heard it all and they're not going to get on your case for a small mistake. the only thing that really bugs people is someone kerchunking the repeater randomly or doubling on top of someone mid-transmission. just listen a bit more before you transmit and you'll pick up the rhythm pretty fast. honestly the best way to learn net procedure is just to check in every week for a month or two and it'll click
