so ive been licensed for about eight months now and ive been making contacts pretty regularly, mostly on 40m and some 2m stuff locally. everyone keeps telling me i need to get set up with LoTW and eQSL but honestly the whole thing is kind of overwhelming and i dont really understand the difference between them or why i would need both.

from what i can tell LoTW is run by the ARRL and its more official for awards and stuff? and eQSL is a separate thing that some people use and some people dont trust? and then theres still paper QSL cards which i guess you mail through the bureau or direct. i went ahead and ordered some cards from one of those printing places and theyre sitting on my desk but i have no idea where to actually send them or how the bureau works.

is there like a simple way to think about this whole system because right now my logbook has maybe 200 contacts in it and i havent confirmed a single one and it feels like im falling behind or something. do most people do all three or just pick one?

totally get the confusion, i remember being in the same spot a few years back. the short version is they're all separate systems and you dont have to use all of them but more confirmation paths means more confirmed contacts which matters if you're chasing awards down the road.

LoTW is the one you really want if you're planning to go for DXCC or WAS eventually - the ARRL only counts LoTW or paper cards for those awards and since paper cards take forever and cost money, LoTW is just way easier. you have to request a certificate through the ARRL website and it can take a week or two to arrive by mail, then you install the TQSL software and upload your log. once the other station uploads theirs it matches automatically and boom, confirmed contact. its kind of clunky to set up the first time but once its going its pretty painless.

eQSL is a totally different network, some people love it some people ignore it completely. it does have an award program of their own but its not recognized by ARRL. that said a lot of casual operators only use eQSL so if you want to confirm contacts with them its the only way short of paper.

paper cards through the bureau - honestly unless someone specifically requests a card or you're chasing a rare entity i wouldnt stress too much about it for now. the bureau can take like a year or more to deliver. some people find the physical card exchange really satisfying though, theres definitely something cool about getting a card in the mail from some station you worked in japan or wherever.

id say get LoTW set up first since thats the most useful, then maybe sign up for eQSL too since its free and easy, and hold onto your printed cards for special contacts or when someone asks.

yeah what he said about LoTW is right. one thing i'll add - get your log uploaded sooner rather than later because the older your contacts are the harder it is to remember details if something doesnt match up. i waited almost a year before uploading mine and had a handful of contacts that just never confirmed, not sure if it was date/time mismatches or what.

also for the paper cards, if you worked anyone in a really rare DX entity or a special event station those guys usually appreciate a direct card with a self addressed stamped envelope or an IRC. the bureau route works but like the other guy said, you might wait forever. ive had cards show up two years after the contact which is kind of funny.
