so i was up late last night just spinning around 20m and honestly i havent heard it this good in years. worked a bunch of JA stations like it was nothing, then out of nowhere i started hearing guys from eastern europe just absolutely booming in. checked pskreporter and it looked like half my signals were making it to places i normally cant get to even with perfect conditions.

i know the solar flux index has been climbing but i didnt realize it would make that much of a difference day to day. like what do you guys actually watch to know when to sit down and get on the air? i keep seeing people mention spaceweather.com and also some DXmaps thing but im not sure what numbers im actually supposed to care about. flux index? A index? K index? i get that higher flux is generally better but beyond that im kinda lost on how it all ties together

also 10m has been doing some crazy stuff in the afternoons this week if anyone hasnt checked it out yet, was genuinely surprised

yeah 10 has been nuts, worked my first ZL on 10m last Tuesday and I've been licensed for like 8 months so that was kind of a big deal for me. i had no idea what was happening, just heard someone calling CQ and figured why not. the signal was so strong i actually double checked i wasnt hearing something local

for the numbers thing - i'm still learning too but from what people have explained to me, you mainly want the solar flux (SFI) to be high, like 150+ is when things really get exciting on the higher bands, and you want the K index to be low, like under 3 ideally. when K goes up it usually means there's some geomagnetic activity messing with things and the bands can go kind of dead or weird. A index is sort of the daily average version of K from what i understand. someone please correct me if im wrong on any of that lol

the other guy pretty much has it right on the K and A index stuff. i'd just add that solar flux alone doesnt tell the whole story - you can have decent flux and still have rotten conditions if there's a coronal mass ejection messing things up. had that happen last cycle more times than i can count, flux looks great and then a CME arrives and suddenly 20m sounds like it's underwater.

what i actually use day to day is DX Maps and also the WWV broadcasts at 18 minutes past the hour give you flux, A, and K right there on the air which is handy if youre already in the shack. for spotting actual openings in real time the DX cluster is still hard to beat, just filter by band and you'll see pretty quick if somethings happening. and yeah 10m this week has been reminding me of the peak of cycle 23, spent a couple hours up there yesterday and worked into Africa with like 50 watts, no effort at all. we're in a good part of the cycle right now, enjoy it
