IC-7300 Overshoot Issue with SPE Expert 1.3K-FA

After connecting my new SPE Expert 1.3K-FA to my IC-7300, I'm experiencing consistent overdrive warnings even with the radio set to 10 watts output. The amp meter spikes to full power momentarily on PTT before settling back to normal levels. I'm hearing about the infamous IC-7300 ALC overshoot problem - is this what's causing my amplifier protection to trigger? Looking for practical solutions beyond just running the radio barefoot at 100W.

A simple external ALC mod solution which 100% resolves the problem entirely (simple pot circuit to provide voltage via a 9v battery to the IC-7300 ALC jack) is available from Acom. Contact them directly for the external ALC circuit schematic - it's a proven fix for the overshoot issue with SPE and other high-end amplifiers.

I had the same issue with my IC-7300 and tube amplifier. There is 2dB power overshoot for less than 5mS. In theory, you need to de-rate an external linear amplifier to 63% of its peak rated power. Setting my amp's timing delay to 25ms helped considerably.

The overshoot is real but manageable. The only problem with the 7300 is the overshoot issue, and unless you're using it with an amp, it really doesn't matter. Most Icom's have a tx power overshoot problem when feeding an amplifier. Consider running higher drive power to your amp rather than trying to fix the radio.
