thinking about doing my first CQ WW this year, any advice?

so ive been licensed about 18 months now and i keep hearing people talk about CQ WW like its this massive deal and honestly i want to see what the fuss is about. i did a little bit of field day last summer with my club which was super fun but that was mostly just me handing mics to the more experienced guys and logging, i didnt really operate much on my own.

my setup right now is a IC-7300 into a dipole in the attic which i know isnt ideal but its what i can do in my HOA situation. i mostly do SSB, havent really gotten into CW yet. the SSB weekend for CQ WW is in late october right? i just want to know if its even worth bothering with my modest setup or if ill just get buried in the pileups and give up frustrated. also are there specific things i should know before jumping in, like exchange info and stuff. i dont want to embarrass myself

honestly just do it, the worst that can happen is you make zero contacts and turn the radio off, which wont happen anyway. even with an attic dipole during CQ WW you'll be shocked what you can work, the band is absolutely wall to wall with stations and a lot of them are big gun DX stations running serious power into big antennas so they can hear you even if you cant always break through to them on the first call.

the exchange for SSB phone is pretty simple, you send your call sign and your zone number, for most of the US that's zone 4 or 5 depending where you are, look up your zone before you start. search and pounce mode is your friend when youre starting out, just tune around and call stations who are already CQing rather than trying to hold a run frequency yourself. you'll make contacts. field day experience actually helps more than you think, same chaotic energy just more DX flavored

CQ WW was my first real contest too and yeah it can feel overwhelming when you first tune in and its just wall to wall signals. one thing nobody told me that wouldve helped -- write your zone number on a sticky note and put it on your radio before you start because in the heat of the moment when someone asks you to repeat your zone you will absolutely blank on it, or at least i did lol. also dont worry about embarrasing yourself, literally nobody cares, everyone is just trying to log contacts as fast as possible and move on. your IC-7300 is a solid rig btw, i ran my first contest on an older Kenwood and you've got a nicer setup than i did
