felt bad after a net checkin last night, not sure what i did wrong

so i checked into the tuesday night local net for maybe the third or fourth time and i think i messed something up but nobody said anything to me directly so now im just sitting here wondering. when the net control called for check-ins i keyed up and gave my call but i think i started talking before i finished IDing? like i said my call and then immediately started saying my name and location without waiting to see if net control acknowledged me first. a couple people went before me and they all paused after giving their call sign before saying anything else.

also i wasnt sure when it was okay to just chat a little vs when you're supposed to keep it short. one guy had a whole conversation with net control about his antenna project and i didnt know if that was a thing you could just do or if he knew the guy personally or what. i dont want to be that person who holds up the net but i also dont want to seem unfriendly. anyway nobody kicked me out or anything so maybe it was fine, just curious how this stuff is supposed to work

honestly you probably did fine, nets are usually pretty forgiving especially local ones. the general flow is you give your call, then wait for net control to come back to you before you say anything else - so yeah you had the right instinct. net control acknowledges you, usually says your call back, and then you give your info. some nets are more structured than others though so it really depends on the net.

as for the chatting thing, that varies a lot. some nets have a formal and informal portion, or net control just knows certain regulars and lets it go longer. once you've checked in a bunch of times and the net control knows your voice you'll get a feel for it. best thing honestly is just to listen to the whole net a few times before checking in, that way you know what the vibe is. sounds like you're already paying attention which is more than a lot of new folks do

yeah same thing happened to me when i first started checking into nets, felt awkward for like the first month lol. the waiting part trips everyone up. just give your callsign, then wait. net control will come back to you and then you do your thing. pretty simple once it clicks.
