getting better audio on SSB - what actually makes a difference vs what doesn't

so ive been messing with my audio chain for a few months now trying to get a cleaner SSB signal and honestly half the advice out there is either ancient or contradictory so figured id start a thread and see what people have actually found to work in practice

my current setup is an IC-7300 running into a Heil PR-40 through a cheap behringer mixer and ive been tweaking the TX equalizer in the radio itself mostly. the 7300 has that parametric eq built in and i spent a whole afternoon last weekend sweeping through frequencies trying to find where my voice sits. found a pretty nasty peak around 500hz that was making me sound muddy on recordings

main thing i want to know is - how much does mic technique actually matter vs just buying a better mic. like im probably 12 inches from the mic and i know thats too far but my shack is cramped and the mic is on a boom that i cant really reposition without it blocking my monitor. should i just fight through the logistics or does a different mic pattern help more in that kind of situation

also curious if anyone has opinions on whether running processing outboard vs in-radio eq is actually audible to the other end or if its mostly just making us feel better about ourselves

mic distance is huge, way more than people realize. 12 inches is too far unless youre in a really quiet room with no ambient noise at all, and even then youre going to lose a lot of presence. the PR-40 is a large diaphragm dynamic so its picking up a lot of room reflections at that distance. try getting it to 4-6 inches even if its awkward, it changes the character completely and you can always roll off a bit of the low end boost you get from proximity if it gets too thick

on the outboard vs in-radio question - honestly the 7300's built in eq is pretty good for most purposes. the thing that actually matters more than any of that is your ALC. if your ALC is constantly pinned and bouncing all over the place your audio is getting chewed up before any of your eq settings even matter. i spent like two weeks chasing an audio problem that turned out to be me driving the mic gain too hot and the ALC was just destroying the dynamics. back it off until the ALC is barely moving on peaks and suddenly everything else you do actually works

yeah the ALC thing is real, caught me out too when i first got on HF. also just want to throw in that a lot of guys obsess over the transmit side and never actually listen back to themselves. if you have a second radio or even a cheap SDR dongle you can set up a near-field monitor to actually hear what youre putting out instead of guessing. its kind of eye opening the first time you do it, i thought i sounded great and then heard myself and realized i had way too much high end sizzle going on, sounded like i was talking through a tin can at the top end

the behringer mixer thing - not knocking it because ive used one myself but make sure your gain staging through the mixer isnt adding noise. those cheap pres can hiss pretty noticeably and that noise floor translates right into your SSB signal. might be worth bypassing it and going direct to the radio to see if it changes anything before you spend time eq'ing
