confused about vanity callsigns and how the whole process works

okay so i just got my general last month and ive been using my sequential call which is fine but honestly its kind of a mouthful and ive been looking into getting a vanity call. i went down the rabbit hole on the FCC ULS system and now im more confused than when i started lol

so from what i can gather you apply through the FCC website and there's like a 18 day waiting period? or is that just for certain license classes. and do you have to already hold a certain class to apply for specific call formats -- like i know the 1x2 and 2x1 calls are more desirable but i dont fully understand which ones i qualify for as a general

also someone at my club mentioned you can list multiple callsigns in order of preference and the system picks the first available one. is that still how it works or did they change that at some point. i feel like i read something about changes a while back but i cant remember where

anyway if anyone has gone through this recently id appreciate hearing how it went. trying to figure out if its worth the effort or if i should just stick with what i have for now

yeah the process is a little confusing at first but once you do it once its pretty straightforward. the 18 day window thing -- thats the file number application period where the FCC holds all the applications that come in and then does a lottery among them if multiple people applied for the same call. so its not really a waiting period in the sense that you just sit there, its more like all applications submitted within that window are treated equally and then if youre the only one who wanted that call you just get it automatically after the window closes.

as a general you can apply for any call in the general or technician format pools, so 1x3 and 2x3 calls mostly, plus 1x2 calls if youre in certain geographic regions that have them available. the coveted 2x1 and 1x2 calls in most formats are reserved for extra class. so if you really want one of those shorter calls it might be worth thinking about upgrading first, just something to consider

the multiple preference thing is still a thing yes -- you can list up to 25 calls in order of preference on your application. theres a site called AE7Q that a lot of people use to check call availability before applying, its a really useful tool for figuring out whats actually out there before you spend the application fee

went through this about six months ago, got my vanity on the first try which i was honestly surprised by. i used AE7Q like everyone recommends and picked a call that had been unassigned for a while so figured the odds were decent. the FCC application itself through ULS is kind of clunky but manageable, just make sure your contact info is all current before you start or it can cause headaches

one thing i wish someone told me -- after you apply dont keep refreshing the FCC site obsessively for two weeks, it will drive you crazy. just set a calendar reminder and check back after the window closes. also the $35 fee is nonrefundable whether you get the call or not so do your homework on availability first
