anyone else do the wednesday night 2m net regularly? thinking about finally checking in

so ive been a tech for about 8 months now and ive been listening to the local 2m net on wednesday nights for probably the last 6 weeks or so but never actually checked in. i dont know why i keep hesitating, i guess i just get nervous about saying something wrong or not knowing the procedure. the net control guy seems pretty friendly from what i can tell just listening.

anyway i was also wondering if anyone knows about special event stations, like i saw something about a lighthouse event coming up and i have no idea how that works. do you just tune around and try to work them? is there a schedule somewhere? any info would be helpful, im still figuring a lot of this out

just do it man, check in. the worst that happens is you fumble your callsign a little and net control just asks you to say it again. honestly most net control operators have heard everything, theyre not going to judge you. just wait for them to call for check-ins, give your callsign phonetically if you want, your name, and your location. thats basically it for most casual nets.

for the lighthouse thing -- yeah its the annual lighthouse and lightship weekend, usually happens in august. theres a list of participating stations on the ILLW website i think. you basically just tune around, mostly on HF but sometimes on 2m if theres one nearby. some of them are really active and make thousands of contacts over the weekend. its a good time, low pressure, the operators running those stations are happy to work you

I checked into my first net way earlier than I probably should have skill-wise and it was totally fine lol. The net control on ours actually welcomed new hams specifically and gave us a little extra time if we needed it. Just go for it, Wednesday nights will come around again fast if this one feels too intimidating.

I dont know much about special event stations specifically but I think the ARRL website has a calendar of upcoming ones, might be worth poking around there. Some of them send out QSL cards or certificates too which is kind of cool when youre just getting started and want something to show for it.
