bands have been weird lately - anyone else noticing this?

so ive been trying to work some DX on 17m and 15m the past couple weeks and its been all over the place. like some days i'll hear nothing, maybe a beacon or two, and then out of nowhere there's a massive opening to europe or south america and i'm working stations left and right for like 45 minutes and then poof, gone again. had a JA station come through on 15m last tuesday at like 2pm local which i wasn't expecting at all.

i've been keeping an eye on the solar flux index on spaceweather.com and it's been bouncing around a lot, saw it up around 165 a few days ago which i thought was pretty decent but then we had a geomagnetic storm mess things up for a day or two. kp index was up around 4-5 which i know usually tanks the higher bands but 40m was actually pretty good during that period which surprised me a bit.

anyway just curious if other people are seeing the same thing or if it's just my local noise situation messing with my head. im running a pretty modest setup, just a dipole up about 30 feet so i know im not going to hear everything thats out there.

yeah the bands have definitely been acting up, that geomagnetic storm last week hit right when i was trying to work a pretty rare one from the indian ocean, timing was brutal. but honestly this is kind of normal for where we are in the solar cycle - we're climbing toward solar max and the flux has been all over the place. the good news is even when it looks bad on paper you can still get these random short openings like you described, the ionosphere does what it wants sometimes regardless of what the indices say.

the JA opening on 15m in the afternoon doesnt surprise me actually, that path can be really good in the late afternoon to early evening your time depending on the season. worth checking pskreporter or dxmaps when you hear things getting busy, sometimes you can see the opening developing before it fully hits your area and get yourself positioned. 17m has been my go-to lately when 15 gets flaky, seems a bit more stable when the flux dips.

im pretty new to hf still figuring all this out but i downloaded the HamAlert app a few weeks ago and set it up to ping me when certain dx entities get spotted and honestly its helped a ton for catching those short openings. dont fully understand all the propagation stuff yet but even i noticed 40m was way better than usual during that stormy period, worked a couple of european stations around sunset which felt like a big deal for me lol. your dipole setup sounds fine by the way, ive heard guys with simple wire antennas work all kinds of stuff when conditions cooperate.
