RemoteHams setup question - latency killing me on SSB

so ive been messing with RemoteHams for a few months now trying to get my home station accessible when im traveling for work and honestly the SDR side of it is way more usable than i expected but SSB voice is just kind of a nightmare depending on what network im on

the setup is a IC-7300 at home going through their RRC-1258 box and on the remote end im using a laptop with the client software, works fine on my home fiber but once im on hotel wifi or even a decent LTE connection the latency stacks up and it gets this weird half-duplex feel where ill start talking and not really know if the other end is hearing me cleanly

anyone else dealt with this and figured out a reasonable workaround? i messed with the buffer settings a bit but not sure i fully understand what im tuning there. the SDR remote side actually feels snappier to me which is weird because you'd think audio streaming would be lighter weight than the full control stuff

also curious if anyone has tried linking this into something like Allstar or IRLP for the VHF side of things, ive got a 2m rig at home too and thought about running both but that might just be overcomplicating things

yeah the buffer thing is the key, you basically have to find the sweet spot between cutting latency and having the audio fall apart under packet loss. i run mine with a pretty aggressive low-latency setting when im on good wifi and then crank it back up when im stuck on hotel connections. the RRC boxes have that codec setting too and i found switching to a lower bitrate codec actually helped more than messing with buffers alone because less data in flight means less jitter

the SDR feeling snappier makes sense actually because the SDR remote is kind of a different architecture, youre streaming IQ or processed audio depending on how its configured but the control latency for tuning and such is separate from voice tx latency so it can feel more responsive even if the raw bandwidth is comparable

havent touched Allstar in years but from what i remember you can run it on a pi alongside the remote stuff without them interfering, theyd just be separate systems sharing the same radio if you set up the audio routing right. probably more trouble than its worth unless you actually need the repeater linking capability for something specific

the half duplex feel is probably your VOX or the RRC handshake timing more than pure latency tbh. i had that exact thing and it drove me nuts for like two weeks, turned out my VOX tail was set too long on the radio side and it was holding the tx open after i stopped talking so by the time it dropped and the remote could key back up everything felt sluggish and weird

also check what your uplink speed is at the home end, not just download. lots of hotel networks are terrible on upload which is the direction your voice is going and people always forget that
