when do you actually break into a net vs just listening?

okay so ive been checking into the local 2m net on tuesday nights for a few months now and i feel like im still not totally sure when its appropriate to break in vs just wait for net control to call for stations. like last week i had some traffic i wanted to pass but wasnt sure if i should just wait for the open check-in window or if i could break in earlier since it was kind of time-sensitive info about a repeater going down for maintenance.

i ended up just waiting and by the time they got to me the info was kind of irrelevant lol. is there like an unwritten rule about this or does it vary by net? also is it rude to just say your callsign during a pause without waiting to be called on? some guys do it and nobody says anything but i dont want to step on anyone

Every net is a little different honestly but the general thing is if you have priority traffic - like actual emergency info or something time-sensitive - most nets have a provision for that and you can break in with just your call and say "priority" or "with traffic" and net control should recognize you. The key is not making it a habit for non-urgent stuff though.

The repeater maintenance thing definitely qualifies in my opinion, I wouldnt have waited either. As for just throwing your call out during a pause, thats pretty standard on most casual nets, net control expects it and its not rude at all. Thats actually how check-ins usually work on looser nets. Just say your callsign clearly and wait. If it's a more formal traffic net like an NTS net, different story, you'd follow their specific protocol more strictly.

yeah same thing happened to me when I first started checking in. I was so worried about doing it wrong that I basically never said anything for like the first month. Turns out most net controls are pretty forgiving especially with newer hams, just listen to how others do it a few times and kind of mirror that. The Tuesday night nets around here are pretty relaxed from what I've heard.
