finally thinking about going for the Extra, worth it or just more studying?

so ive been a General for about 3 years now and people keep telling me to just go ahead and get the Extra but honestly the theory questions on the practice tests are killing me. like i understand antennas and basic propagation fine but then there's all this stuff about reactive impedance and filter design and laplace transforms or whatever and i just kind of stare at it. i dont really USE most of this stuff day to day so im wondering if its worth the effort to actually understand it vs just memorizing enough to pass the pool. also i guess my main question is does Extra actually open up a lot more operating or is it more just the HF phone subbands that matter? i mostly do CW and digital so im not sure how much i'd even notice the difference in privileges

honest answer - the Extra subbands matter way more than people let on especially on 40 and 80 where the General portion gets crowded as heck during contests. the theory stuff you can absolutely memorize without deeply understanding all of it, thats what most people do. the laplace and filter stuff is like maybe 5-6 questions in the whole pool and if you get the formulas down you'll recognize them. i spent maybe 6 weeks with hamstudy.org and passed first try, didnt really understand half the vector impedance questions but i passed. the privileges were immediately noticeable for me on 80m CW.

yeah i went through this exact same thing last year. tbh the digital stuff like FT8 you probably wont notice much difference but if you ever want to get into 160m or work the lower parts of 40m phone it opens up. i will say though - going through the theory even just surface level made me actually understand why my antenna tuner was doing what it was doing, so there was some side benefit to studying it even if i couldnt derive anything from scratch. the exam itself wasnt as bad as i expected once i just drilled the question pool for a few weeks.
