first real contest season coming up - where do i even start

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i keep hearing people talk about CQ WW and Field Day and SOTA activations and honestly it all kind of blurs together for me. like i get the basic idea, you make contacts and log points, but i dont really understand how they're all different from each other or which one would even be good to jump into as a newer operator.

from what i can tell CQ WW is like... huge? worldwide thing, lots of activity on the bands, but i worry i'd just get stepped on or ignored with my 100w and a dipole. Field Day seems more casual and social which sounds more my speed but i've also heard some clubs take it really seriously so i dont know if showing up as a random newcomer is weird or not. and then SOTA is a totally different animal right, thats more portable operating from summits, not really a traditional contest.

anyway the point is im trying to figure out which of these to actually participate in this year and could use some advice from people who have done them. also are there any good resources for tracking upcoming events? i found the ARRL contest calendar but it feels overwhelming with how many things are listed.

Field Day is honestly the perfect starting point and i'd say that to anyone. most clubs are thrilled to have extra operators show up, especially if you're there to learn. you dont have to run your own station, you can just sit next to someone experienced and watch how they handle pile-ups and exchange information, and then take the mic when you feel ready. some of the best operating advice i ever got was just from sitting next to an old timer during Field Day and watching how they worked the bands.

CQ WW is a beast but dont let that scare you off completely. even with 100w and a wire antenna you will make contacts, it just takes patience. the DX stations running high power will have huge pile-ups but if you're just hunting mults and filling your log it can be really satisfying. i'd maybe try a few hours of it rather than committing to a full 48 hour effort your first time.

SOTA is yeah totally different, less about raw contact numbers and more about the activation itself, being on a summit, running QRP usually. thats its own whole rabbit hole but a great one if you like hiking.

for tracking whats coming up i really like contestcalendar.com in addition to the ARRL one, it shows more of the smaller regional contests too which are actually great for practicing before the big ones. also the CQ WW website has all the rules laid out pretty clearly if you want to read through them before the october dates roll around.

i did my first CQ WW SSB last year with basically your exact setup and managed a few hundred contacts over the weekend, nothing impressive but it was addicting. you kind of learn as you go honestly
