when do you actually need to use phonetics on air

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still feel kinda awkward using phonetics, like when do you actually need to use them vs just saying the letters normally? on 2m repeater i usually just say my callsign normally and nobody seems to care but then i jumped on 40m the other day and someone corrected me and told me to use nato phonetics for my suffix. is there an actual rule about this or is it just a courtesy thing? i dont want to sound dumb either way

honestly theres no hard rule in part 97 that says you HAVE to use phonetics, but on HF especially when conditions are rough it just makes sense. if someone asks you to say your call again and youre just saying letters, half the time it sounds like static. the whole point of the nato alphabet is that each word sounds different enough from the others that even through garbage propagation you can tell a Lima from a Romeo. on a local 2m repeater with full quieting its kind of overkill yeah, but once you start working DX or contesting youll start doing it automatically without even thinking about it. some guys overdo it on the repeater and it sounds weird, so theres definitely a time and place thing going on

yeah what he said basically. i used to feel the same way about it, like it felt theatrical or something. what clicked for me was operating in a pile-up once where i kept getting walked over because nobody could copy my call. switched to phonetics and got through on the second try. also worth noting some older ops get kind of grumpy if you use non-standard phonetics, like saying something other than the nato ones. ive heard people say Whiskey for W and then use like... Washington for something else and it just throws people off mid qso
