Winlink setup - RMS gateway stuff is confusing me

so ive been trying to get Winlink working for a few weeks now and i think i mostly understand the concept but the RMS gateway side of things is where i keep getting lost. like i get that youre sending email over radio and the gateway is basically the relay point but when i fire up Winlink Express and try to connect via VHF packet it just times out. im running a TNC-Pi hooked up to my 2m rig and i can see the gateway frequency in the list, pretty sure theres one about 40 miles from me that should be workable.

the part that really has me scratching my head is the message handling once it actually gets through - like does it just sit at the gateway until i reconnect to retrieve it or does it forward automatically. i read the documentation but it kind of assumes you already know some of this stuff. any of you guys running a setup like this that can walk me through what im probably doing wrong

yeah the timeout thing is almost always a TNC config issue in my experience. check that your TNC-Pi is actually talking to Winlink Express on the right COM port and baud rate - the software defaults to something that doesnt always match. also make sure your audio levels are sane if youre doing 1200 baud packet, too hot and the gateway wont decode you even if you can hear it fine.

on the message handling question - yes it holds at the CMS (thats the central server, the gateway just passes it along) until you retrieve it on your next session. the gateway itself isnt really storing anything, its more like a pipe. so if you send something itll sit there waiting for the other person to connect and grab it. works the same way in reverse. once you get one successful connect it kind of clicks and makes more sense than the docs make it sound.

40 miles on VHF packet is pushing it depending on terrain honestly. i had a similar problem and spent forever blaming my TNC when it turned out the gateway i was trying to hit just wasnt hearing me well enough to establish the AX.25 connection. try looking up if theres a closer one or see if anyone in your area is running a Winlink node you can test with at shorter range first. also Winlink has a telnet mode you can use over internet just to verify your account and software setup are actually working before you go blaming the RF path
