first WWFF activation this weekend, went better than expected honestly

so i finally did my first WWFF activation over the weekend, been meaning to try it for months but kept putting it off because i wasnt sure i had the right setup for working portable outdoors. ended up heading out to a local nature reserve that has a WWFF reference, KFF number and everything, and just set up my KX3 with a 20m end fed wire thrown up in a tree. honestly pretty rough setup but it worked fine.

got my 44 contacts in about an hour and a half which i guess is the minimum you need to log the activation as valid. what surprised me was how many people were already hunting for WWFF references, like i spotted myself on the WWFF spotting network and within a few minutes had a small pileup going which i was NOT expecting as a first timer. super friendly bunch too, people were patient when i fumbled around a bit.

only issue was my battery situation, i brought a 4ah lipo and it was down to like 20% by the time i wrapped up, probably should have run lower power or brought a bigger pack. anyway if anyone has been on the fence about trying WWFF i'd say just go do it, its way less stressful than i thought it would be and the parks are nice too which is kind of the whole point i guess

congrats on the first one, that feeling when the pileup starts is something else right. 44 in 90 minutes is solid especially for a first activation, some references are harder to work depending on location and what bands you have going. i usually try to get on 40m as well if im out for more than an hour or two, really helps fill the log when 20 starts getting slow in the afternoon.

for the battery thing, yeah that bites everyone at least once. i run a 10ah lifepo4 now and honestly barely make a dent in it even for a long afternoon session at 10 watts. bit heavier to carry but worth it for the peace of mind. the KX3 is a great rig for this by the way, lots of wwff folks use them. welcome to the addiction, you'll be planning the next one before the week is out

thats awesome, ive been wanting to try WWFF too but i keep getting confused about how the references work and whether i need to register in advance or anything. did you just show up and operate or was there some kind of pre-registration thing you had to do? also does it matter what mode you use or can you do digital too
