new to repeaters - why does nobody hear me when i transmit?

ok so i finally got my technician license last month and picked up a baofeng uv-5r (i know i know, everyone has opinions about those) and ive been trying to get on the local 2m repeater. i can hear people talking on it just fine but when i try to key up nobody seems to hear me or acknowledge me at all. i tried calling out a few times like just saying my callsign and that im listening and nothing happens. i checked the frequency and offset and those seem right based on the repeater directory website.

someone at the club mentioned something about a CTCSS tone and i looked it up but im still confused about whether i need to program one in and how to find out what the right one is. the repeater listing on the site shows something like 100.0 but i wasnt sure if that was what i needed to set or if thats what the repeater sends out. any help appreciated, still figuring all this out

yeah that's almost definitely the CTCSS issue. so basically most repeaters these days require you to transmit a subaudible tone along with your voice so the repeater knows to open up - without it your signal might be hitting the machine just fine but the repeater itself is ignoring you because it doesnt see the tone it's looking for. the 100.0 in the listing is almost certainly the tone you need to transmit, not just receive.

in your baofeng menu you want to go into the channel settings and look for T-CTCS (thats the transmit tone) and set that to 100.0 Hz. theres also R-CTCS which is what the repeater sends back to you - you can set that too if you want your radio to only open the squelch when the repeater is transmitting, but that ones optional honestly. once you get the transmit tone set right youll probably find it works straight away. good luck, and dont be shy about calling out - most of the folks on local repeaters are happy to welcome a new ham

oh man i had the exact same problem when i started lol. spent like two weeks thinking the repeater was broken or my radio was bad. turns out i just never set the tone. once i figured that out everything clicked. also just a heads up - some repeaters are open (no tone needed) and some are closed or require membership, so if you fix the tone thing and still cant get in it might be worth checking if thats a club-only machine or something
