Winlink setup - RMS gateway keeps dropping my sessions mid-transfer

so ive been messing with Winlink for about 3 weeks now and im mostly getting it to work but theres this one issue thats been driving me nuts. when i connect to an RMS gateway via Vara HF it'll start the session fine, handshake looks good, and then somewhere in the middle of pulling down messages the session just drops. not every time but maybe 6 out of 10 attempts. i end up with partial message downloads and have to reconnect which sometimes works and sometimes the gateway wont accept me again for a few minutes

im running Winlink Express on a fairly recent laptop, IC-7300 feeding into the Vara HF modem, and im connecting to a gateway thats probably 200 miles away which i know isnt ideal but its one of the stronger ones i can hear. my RF reports look decent, usually getting 4 to 5 bars on signal quality when the session first establishes

anybody run into this? is this a VARA setting thing, a Winlink Express config issue, or is it just the nature of connecting to a busy gateway from this far out. im not sure if the gateway itself is having problems or if its something on my end. tried a few different gateways with similar results but not all of them

yeah this sounds like it could be a propagation consistency issue more than a config problem. 200 miles on HF is kind of an awkward distance depending on your band - you can be in the skip zone for 40m and too close for 20m to really settle in. what band are you working on and what time of day are you seeing the drops

also check your VARA bandwidth setting. if you have it set too wide for the conditions VARA will try to use modes it cant sustain and the session degrades mid-transfer. i dropped mine down to 500hz bandwidth when conditions are mediocre and the session reliability went way up even though throughput is slower. better to finish slow than drop halfway through

one more thing - Winlink Express has a setting for session timeout, make sure its not set too aggressive. some defaults are pretty short and if the gateway gets even a few seconds of noise it can time out on you

had almost the exact same thing when i first got into Winlink, turned out my sound card sample rate was drifting slightly and VARA was losing sync partway through longer sessions. went into the Windows sound settings and forced the sample rate to 48000hz on both input and output and it basically stopped happening. its a dumb windows thing but it gets a lot of people. worth checking before you tear apart your whole setup
