SSB audio always sounds like garbage on my end, what am i doing wrong

so ive been on HF for about 8 months now and mostly doing SSB on 40 and 20m, got a used IC-7300 which i know is a solid radio but i keep getting reports that my audio sounds muffled or like im talking through a pillow. sometimes people say its fine but more often than not someone's asking me to speak up or says the audio quality isnt great. im using the stock mic that came with the radio, the HM-219 or whatever it is, and i run it pretty close to my face maybe 2-3 inches away.

ive messed with the mic gain a little bit but honestly i dont really know what the right ALC behavior should look like. sometimes the ALC meter is barely moving and sometimes it swings pretty hard. i read somewhere that you want ALC to just barely move but i also read the opposite. compression is set to 4 which i think is the default, not sure if that's too much or too little. i feel like ive been just guessing at this point. anyone have a solid baseline for 7300 mic settings for SSB or just general tips on getting audio to not sound terrible?

the ALC thing trips up a lot of people. basically you want your normal speaking voice to just barely tickle the ALC - like it shouldn't be pegged or swinging wildly, but you do want to see some movement when you're talking at normal volume. if it's barely moving at all your mic gain is probably too low and you're not driving the transmitter properly. too much and you start getting compression artifacts and distortion which sounds exactly like what you're describing - that muffled pillow effect.

on the 7300 specifically i'd set mic gain around 50-55 to start and speak at a normal conversational level, not yelling into it. check your ALC and adjust from there. also the speech processor (compression) at 4 is kinda borderline for casual rag chewing, some guys run it lower like 2-3 for better audio fidelity and only crank it up when propagation is rough and you need to punch through. the stock HM-219 is honestly not a great mic, a lot of guys swap it for a Heil or even a decent dynamic like an SM58 with the right adapter and it makes a noticeable difference. but fix the gain settings first before blaming the mic.

yeah what he said about the stock mic is real, i had the same issue on my 7300 when i first got it. switched to a Heil PR-781 and got way better reports almost immediately. but also something nobody mentioned - where are you located relative to your mic matters more than people think. too close and you get proximity effect which makes everything bass-heavy and muddy, too far and you lose level. i do like 6-8 inches honestly, sounds counterintuitive but it cleaned up my audio a lot. also make sure you're talking across the mic not directly into it if you're using a dynamic.
