Winlink setup driving me crazy - RMS gateway not connecting

so ive been trying to get Winlink Express working for probably two weeks now and im at my wits end. i can see nearby RMS gateways in the list, the one about 12 miles from me usually shows good activity, but every time i try to initiate a Vara FM session it just times out after like 30 seconds or so. no connection, nothing in the session log except the standard timeout message.

my setup is a TM-V71A going into the SignaLink USB, levels look reasonable to me, i've got the VARA FM soundcard pointed at the right device in the config. PTT is keying, i can see the TX light on the radio going when it should. the gateway shows as active on the Winlink map too so its not like its down.

what am i missing here, is there some timing thing with the VARA handshake i need to tweak or is this more likely an audio level problem. i feel like ive read every setup guide out there and still something isnt clicking.

the symptom you're describing, keying up but never getting a response from the RMS, that's almost always audio levels or the VARA FM bandwidth setting being wrong. a lot of people set their TX audio way too hot thinking more is better and the gateway just can't decode it. try dropping the TX drive in SignaLink and also in the VARA FM soundcard settings until you're seeing maybe 3-4khz deviation, not pegged.

also worth checking - is the RMS gateway running VARA FM narrow or wide? the TM-V71A should handle either but you need to match what the gateway is advertising. you can look that up on winlink.org under the gateway details. if it's set to wide and your radio is in narrow mode or vice versa that'll cause exactly what you're seeing. been down this road myself on a 710G and it took me forever to figure out the bandwidth mismatch thing.

yeah check your squelch too, sounds dumb but if squelch is too tight the gateway's response comes back and your radio doesnt open up fast enough to catch the beginning of the VARA handshake. i had this exact problem and felt like an idiot when i figured it out. just open squelch all the way when doing digital stuff honestly, theres no reason to have it on.
