finally pulled the trigger on an IC-7300 - some thoughts after a few weeks

so ive been running an old TS-590SG for about four years and honestly it was fine, great radio, no complaints really. but i kept seeing people talk about the 7300 and the waterfall display and i finally just bought one used off a guy local to me, came with the original box and everything so i figured why not.

first thing i noticed is the touchscreen is actually useful, like i was skeptical because i assumed it would be one of those gimmicky things but i find myself using it constantly to adjust the passband and notch. the waterfall sensitivity took me a few days to dial in but now its set up pretty much where i want it. real-time band conditions are kind of addictive honestly, i catch openings i would have totally missed before just because i wasnt actively listening.

one thing that did bug me though - the stock mic they include is not great. i had a SM-30 already so i swapped it out immediately but if you dont have a desktop mic sitting around the stock one is gonna disappoint you. also the fan kicks on at what feels like random times and its louder than the 590 ever was, nothing crazy but you notice it in a quiet shack.

overall though im pretty happy. anyone else running one of these that has tips for the DSP settings, i feel like im not getting the most out of the noise reduction options

the NR on the 7300 is honestly best left pretty conservative, like i usually run mine at maybe 5-7 on the slider and anything above that starts smearing voices on SSB to the point where it sounds weird. on CW you can push it harder without as many artifacts. the APF filter is what really shines for CW if you havent played with that yet, narrow it down and it cuts through a pile pretty well.

also try messing with the twin PBT if you havent - inner and outer passband tuning together. i spent way too long just using the regular width setting before i figured out you can shift the whole passband off center to null out a carrier thats sitting right on the edge of your signal. changed how i use the radio completely.

yeah the fan thing is just how it is, mine does the same. i put a small piece of acoustic foam behind the radio kind of angled to deflect the airflow and it made a noticeable difference in how much i actually hear it. probably voiding some warranty or whatever but the radio runs fine and its been over a year so.
