using DXwatch and QRZ spotting together - am i doing this right?

so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i finally feel like im starting to get into the DX side of things. got a few DXCC entities worked which feels pretty good for a tech upgrade to general. anyway i started poking around DXwatch and the QRZ logbook spotting stuff and im a little confused about how they all connect together.

like i have the QRZ app on my phone and i can see spots coming in, and then i also have DXwatch open in a browser tab and sometimes the spots are different or show up at different times. are these pulling from the same cluster network or are they separate things? i tried reading about it but the documentation is kind of all over the place and i feel like im missing something obvious.

also is there a better app someone would recommend for watching the cluster on mobile? i saw some people mention DX Toolkit and also something called Ham Radio Deluxe has a cluster window but i dont have HRD. just trying to figure out what most people are actually using day to day

good question and yeah it can be confusing at first. basically both DXwatch and the QRZ spot network are pulling from the same underlying DX cluster network - the spots originate from nodes all over the world that are all interconnected, stuff like the Reverse Beacon Network feeds into it too for CW and digital. but the aggregators (DXwatch, QRZ, DX Summit, etc) all have slightly different refresh rates and filters so youll see timing differences between them. its not like one is better than the other necessarily, they just grab the data a little differently.

for mobile i personally use DX Toolkit on android and its been solid for a couple years now. nothing fancy but it shows the cluster feed, you can filter by band, set alerts for specific callsigns or entities youre chasing. that alert feature is really useful when youre waiting for a specific rare one to show up. some guys swear by just keeping DX Summit open in the mobile browser which works fine too honestly

yeah what he said about the cluster network being all connected is right. i spent way too long thinking DXwatch and DX Summit were competitors with totally different data lol they really are mostly the same spots just displayed differently.

one thing i will add - if you get into logging with something like Log4OM or even just the built in QRZ logbook, some of those have direct cluster integrations that are actually pretty nice because the spots link right to your log so you can see at a glance if you need that entity or not. saved me from working a bunch of dupes when i was chasing DXCC. might be worth looking at depending on how seriously you want to get into the hunting side of things
