thinking about going for extra class, is the theory stuff really that hard?

so ive been a general for about two years now and ive been going back and forth on whether to bother with the extra class exam. i mostly do HF, some 40m and 20m SSB, occasional digital modes. my friend keeps telling me the theory on the extra exam is way more involved than general and i'll need to actually understand the math not just memorize answers. is that true? like i remember for general i could mostly just memorize the pool and do fine but people keep saying extra is different. also wondering if the full privileges are actually worth it in practice or if im just going to end up on the same parts of the bands i already use. the exclusive extra segments on 20m and 40m seem kind of nice in theory but i dont know how crowded they really are vs the general portions. anyway im probably overthinking this, just curious what people who've done it think

honestly the math isnt as scary as people make it out to be. theres definitely more theory - impedance matching, filter design, propagation stuff, some of the amplifier questions - but if you actually sit down with the pool and work through the formulas it clicks pretty fast. i used the hamstudy site and just ground through it over about three weeks. the LC circuit calculations and the reactance stuff tripped me up at first but once you see the pattern its fine. the memorization crowd will tell you to just brute force the pool and yeah that works too but i found understanding the why made it stick better and honestly made me a better operator. as for the band privileges, the extra segments on 20 are noticeably less congested during contests, thats probably where you'll notice it most.

just passed mine like six weeks ago so this is fresh. the theory isnt impossible but there were definitely questions where i was like okay i have no idea whats actually happening here, i just know the answer is C. the stuff about digital signal processing and some of the operating procedures for stuff i've never done felt random. but yeah i passed first try with a decent score so dont stress too much. the extra segments thing is real, i jumped on 14.150 during a contest weekend and it was way cleaner than the zoo happening down around 14.225, made a bunch of contacts i probably wouldnt have otherwise
