first SOTA activation next weekend, anything i should know?

so ive been chasing summits for about 6 months now and finally decided to just go do one myself. picked out a W6 summit that looks pretty manageable, maybe 2 miles each way with around 800ft gain. not crazy but enough that im actually a little nervous about the whole thing.

my plan is to bring my KX2 with a 40m/20m linked dipole, gonna throw it up in an inverted V off a carbon fiber mast. ive seen a lot of activators do it this way so hopefully it works out. planning to self spot on SOTAwatch once i get up there, my phone usually has signal on most peaks around here.

i guess my main question is just... is there anything that catches people off guard the first time? i know the basics, 4 contacts minimum in the activation zone, log it on the database afterward, all that. but like the little things that experienced activators wish someone had told them. weather changes fast up high, i already know that one lol. anything else?

congrats on making the jump from chaser to activator, its a big deal and honestly the other side of the log is way more fun in my opinion. one thing that got me the first time was forgetting to actually post an alert on SOTAwatch ahead of time. you dont HAVE to but man it makes such a difference, chasers will be watching and youll have a pileup within the first couple calls instead of sitting there wondering if anyone is even listening. do it the night before if you can.

also dont underestimate how long things take on the summit. you get up there, youre tired, maybe wind is messing with your mast setup, hands are cold, and suddenly youre burning 45 minutes just getting on the air. i always build in more time than i think i need now. and bring more food than you think too, operating burns more mental energy than people expect. good luck, post how it goes

the linked dipole setup sounds solid, should work great. one thing i'd say is have a backup plan for if you cant get the mast up for whatever reason -- i always carry a short length of wire i can just toss over a tree branch or even operate with it close to the ground in a pinch. 4 contacts on 40 is usually not that hard even with a compromised antenna if conditions arent terrible. oh and double check your KX2 battery situation before you leave, i once got up a summit and realized i hadnt charged since the previous weekend. still made it work but it was stressful haha
