wire dipole vs vertical for 40m - am i overthinking this

so ive been going back and forth on this for like three weeks now and i need someone to just tell me to stop second guessing myself. i have a decent sized backyard, maybe 120 feet end to end diagonally, and i keep reading that a half wave dipole on 40 is the obvious answer but then i go down a rabbit hole and suddenly everyone is singing the praises of a vertical with radials and i lose another evening.

current situation is i have nothing on 40 at all, running a G5RV on the higher bands and its doing fine but 40 is basically dead for me right now. i work mostly evenings, maybe a little dx when i can catch it, not doing serious contesting or anything. the yard isnt huge and my neighbor situation is tolerable as long as i dont put something in his eyeline which kind of limits where the far end of a dipole would go.

is there actually a practical difference i would notice day to day or is this one of those things where the math says 3dB and real life says who cares. genuinely asking because i feel like ive read too many opinions at this point and they all contradict each other.

honest answer? if you have the space for a dipole get the dipole up first and worry about the vertical later. a dipole at even 30 feet is going to do solid work on 40 for what you're describing. the vertical with a good radial field can compete but that ground work is where people underestimate the effort - if you're laying 16 or 32 radials thats a whole project in itself.

the angle of radiation difference between the two is real but at the distances you're probably working on 40 in the evenings it matters less than people think. where a vertical shines is low angle dx stuff and if thats your main goal then yeah it's worth thinking about. but if you just want 40m working tonight, dipole wins on ease and you can always add the vertical later. put it up inverted-v if the center support is taller than your endpoints, works fine and cuts down on the span you need.

i had almost the exact same debate last year and ended up going vertical just because the neighbor thing was real for me too. built a 40m vertical with about 20 radials on the ground and its been pretty good honestly. not blowing anyone away but i made a contact into japan last winter which i was not expecting at all so low angle radiation is real i guess lol. the radial laying was annoying but i did it over a weekend and stapled them into the grass and they disappered after a month. if your backyard is the constraint it might be worth it just so you're not fighting the geometry of where the dipole ends land.
