SSB audio always sounds like garbage on my end - what am I missing

so ive been on HF for about two years now mostly doing digital but lately ive been trying to get into SSB voice more and honestly my audio is embarrassing. People keep asking me to say again or they say i sound muffled or bassy. im running an IC-7300 into a Heil PR-40 which i thought would be pretty solid combo but something is clearly off.

ive played with the mic gain, got the ALC dancing around where i think it should be, turned on the TX eq in the radio and messed with that a bit. compression is on but maybe too much? i honestly dont know where to start. someone at the club said my TX bandwidth might be too wide and thats causing issues but that seems backwards to me - wouldnt wider be better for voice clarity

also for context im usually on 40m late evenings so theres always some noise and qsb going on. wondering if thats just making everything worse and im chasing a problem that doesnt really exist

the ALC thing trips up a lot of people. if your ALC is peaking anywhere close to the top of the meter youre probably overdriving and thats exactly what makes you sound muffled or distorted on the other end. the general rule i follow is back the mic gain down until the ALC is barely moving on voice peaks, like maybe a third of the way up max. then if you want more punch use the compression, but even then keep it moderate - heavy compression makes you sound like youre calling from a tin can.

on the TX bandwidth question your club guy isnt wrong but its more nuanced than just wide vs narrow. if youre set to like 2.8 or 3kHz thats fine for SSB but if youre cranking bass frequencies and theyre bleeding out the bottom that can cause splatter and make you sound muddy. the PR-40 is a side-address mic too so make sure youre actually talking into the right part of it, people mess that up all the time. and check the low cut filter in the 7300s menu, thats usually set around 100hz by default but bumping it to 200hz or so can clean up the low end a lot especially on 40m where the band noise is already rough

yeah 40m late evening is rough no matter what, ive had contacts where the other op had perfect audio and still sounded like a garbage disposal because the band was just being a nightmare. dont necessarily assume its all you.

that said, one thing i do before any serious operating is find a local buddy or someone on a nearby repeater and do a quick test transmission. way better than trying to guess from ALC meters alone. the 7300 also has that monitor function where you can hear yourself through the radio which is kinda useful even though it never sounds exactly like what the other station hears
