when do you actually check in to a net vs just listen - confused newcomer here

ok so ive been licensed for about 3 months now and i mostly just listen to the local 2m repeater. there's a weekly net on monday nights and i've been tuning in but never actually checked in because honestly i dont really know the proper way to do it and i dont want to mess it up or say something wrong on the air.

like i know you're supposed to wait for the net control to ask for check-ins and then give your callsign but theres so much other stuff i feel like i'm missing. do you just say your call once or twice? do you say your name and location every time or just sometimes? i tried looking this up and got a bunch of different answers depending on the net type so now i'm more confused than before.

also what happens if you accidentally key up at the wrong time - is that a huge deal or do people just move on? i feel like everyone on that net has been doing it for years and they'll notice if i make a mistake

oh man i remember feeling exactly this way when i first got my ticket. the short answer is just do it - seriously, net control has heard every possible mistake and they are almost always happy to have new check-ins. nobody's grading you.

for most local 2m nets you just say your callsign phonetically once when net control asks for check-ins, then wait. some nets like you to add your name and maybe if you have traffic or not. just listen to how a couple other people do it and copy that format, you'll pick it up fast. and if you key up at the wrong time just unkey, wait a second, and let someone else go - happens all the time, net control will just move along. the monday night net crowd is usually pretty welcoming, i'd just jump in next week.

yeah same boat here when i started, i lurked for like 6 weeks before i finally checked in lol. what finally got me to do it was realizing nobody was actually paying close attention to whether i said it perfect or not. my first check-in i think i stumbled over my callsign and net control just repeated it back to confirm and moved on. total non-event.

one thing i'll add - some nets have a specific format they announce at the start so if you catch the preamble at the beginning of the net it'll usually tell you exactly what they want. location, name, traffic, whatever. once you do it once or twice it just becomes automatic.
