SO2R actually worth the headache? my rate barely improved

so ive been running SO2R for about three contest seasons now and honestly im still not sure im doing it right. the rate improvement i expected just hasnt materialized the way guys on the reflectors said it would. im using two K3s with a bandmaster controller and the antenna switching is mostly sorted out, RFI between the two rigs was a nightmare to deal with but i think i have it tamed with some chokes and the second radio is on a separate vertical for multipliers while the run radio is on the yagi.

the problem i think is my operating rhythm. like i know the theory, you work a mult on radio 2 while keeping your CQ frequency on radio 1, but actually doing it smoothly under pressure when the rate is good i just revert to single radio habits and ignore radio 2 entirely. then when rate drops i fumble around on radio 2 and miss callers on radio 1. anyone been through this phase and actually come out the other side or is there a practice routine that helped click it into place

yeah that clicking into place thing took me probably two full years of serious contesting before SO2R felt natural. the fumbling phase is real and honestly expected. what helped me most was forcing myself to use radio 2 even when it felt uncomfortable, like setting a personal rule that if my run rate drops below 60/hr for more than 90 seconds i switch attention to radio 2 no exceptions. muscle memory stuff.

also and this is the thing nobody really talks about, your audio setup matters as much as the RF side. if youre not using stereo headphones with each radio in a separate ear its so much harder to track both at once. some guys swear by the ears thing where you train yourself to half-listen to radio 1 while actively working radio 2. takes a while but its a real skill. also N1MM has some SO2R features that help with the footswitch timing if youre not already using those, makes the PTT switching less clunky during exchanges.

honestly the antenna isolation is where most people underestimate the complexity. what bands are you trying to run simultaneously? 20 and 15 is way more forgiving than trying to do 40 and 15 or anything involving 160. if your two frequencies are harmonically related even loosely youre going to have a bad time no matter how many chokes you throw at it. i spent a whole winter building a dedicated bandpass filter set before SO2R actually felt clean.
