confused about when to check in vs just listening on a net

ok so i've been licensed for about 8 months now (general) and i still get kind of nervous around nets. like i know the basics, you wait for net control to ask for check-ins and then you give your callsign, but theres so much stuff i see people doing that i dont fully understand yet.

like last week i was on the 2m tuesday evening net and someone just jumped in mid-net and started talking to net control like they were having a regular QSO. net control handled it fine but i could tell they were a little annoyed maybe? and then another time i was on an HF net and someone passed traffic and i had no idea what was happening or what the format was supposed to be.

i guess my question is -- is there like an unwritten rulebook for this stuff or do you just kind of absorb it over time from listening? i dont want to be that guy who does something dumb on a net and embarrasses himself. also is it rude to just listen to a net without ever checking in? ive been doing that a lot because im still learning

Honestly the best thing you can do is exactly what you're doing -- just listen for a while before jumping in. Nobody worth their salt is going to give you grief for monitoring. Nets are open to everyone and there's no obligation to check in unless it's a closed or membership net, which they usually tell you upfront.

The traffic handling stuff is a whole separate world, that's formal message handling through the NTS (National Traffic System) and it has its own procedures and formats. If you're curious about it there are some good ARRL resources but it can feel pretty arcane at first. Don't worry about it unless you want to get into it specifically.

As for the guy who jumped in mid-net, yeah that's generally considered poor form. You wait for net control to open the floor, period. Net control is running the show and interrupting them mid-sentence is just rude no matter how casual the net feels. Most net controls are pretty gracious about it because they've seen it a hundred times, but still.

Just keep listening and one day you'll check in and it'll feel totally natural. That's how it works for most of us.

im pretty new myself, got my ticket like 5 months ago, but i found that just checking in once even if you have nothing to say really helps. you just give your call when net control asks for check-ins and then when they come back to you you say something like "no traffic, no comments" and thats literally it. took me a few times to work up to it but once i did the first time it wasnt a big deal at all.

the listening without checking in thing is totally fine by the way, its called monitoring and everyone does it
