first SOTA activation coming up, nervous about the summit reference stuff

so ive been chasing SOTA for about 6 months now and finally decided to just do an activation myself. picked out W4T/SU-001 which is about a 3 mile hike from the trailhead near me, not super hard terrain but still a real summit. my question is mostly about the reference thing - like do i need to pre-register the activation somewhere before i go or can i just log it after the fact on sotadata? ive read the general guide on the sota website like three times and i keep second-guessing myself on whether the activation zone has to be the actual peak or just within 25 meters vertical of it.

also im planning to run my ft-818 with a linked dipole, should have no problem making the 4 contacts but im a little worried about propagation since ill probably be up there midweek around noon. any tips from people who have done their first one would be great, especially if you've worked that particular summit before

congrats on taking the plunge, first activations are honestly the best. to answer your main question - no you dont pre-register, you just log it on sotadata after you get home. the only thing you might want to do beforehand is post an alert on sotawatch so chasers know you're coming, that way you'll have people listening for you and getting those 4 contacts is way easier. seriously post the alert, even just a rough time window, makes a huge difference especially midweek when activity is lower.

the activation zone is 25 meters vertical drop from the summit, so you have a bit of wiggle room. you dont have to be standing on the literal highest rock. and noon propagation on midweek isnt ideal but with an ft-818 and a dipole youll be fine on 40m, just call CQ SOTA and someone will find you. have fun with it, the first one is always memorable even if everything goes sideways a little

oh man I was in the exact same spot last year. just do it, the community is super forgiving and nobody expects perfection on a first activation. one thing i wish someone had told me - bring way more water than you think you need and test your antenna setup in the backyard first so youre not fumbling with it on the summit. i forgot to do that my first time and spent like 20 minutes getting the dipole sorted while i was already tired from the hike lol. the sotawatch alert thing the other person mentioned is real, i had 8 contacts waiting for me within the first few minutes once i got on air because chasers had seen my alert
