finally got my 2m/70cm rig mounted in the truck, few questions

so i've been putting this off for like two months but finally got my TM-V71A mounted under the dash this weekend. ran the power leads direct to the battery with an inline fuse and used some of that split loom stuff to keep it tidy. overall pretty happy with how it came out but i have a couple things bugging me.

first the antenna situation - i've got a mag mount NMO on the roof right now just to get it working but im getting some RF into the audio when i transmit on UHF especially. like a buzzing kind of noise in the speaker that pulses with my voice. the mag mount cable is just routed through the door frame seal which i know isnt ideal. would running a proper NMO hole mount through the roof actually help with that or is it probably a grounding thing somewhere in my power wiring.

second thing, the control head mounting bracket that comes with the V71 is kind of junk honestly. the little RAM mount adapter i ordered doesnt quite fit without some fiddling. has anyone fabbed up something custom or found a third party bracket that works well for that radio specifically. i want it more in my line of sight instead of shoved under the dash where it is now.

anyway glad to finally have it in there, was running HT out the window for embarrassingly long

the RF audio thing is almost certainly your grounding. mag mounts can be okay but if the cable is getting pinched in the door seal it can pick up all kinds of garbage. try running a separate ground strap from the radio chassis directly to a known good chassis ground point and see if that cleans it up before you start drilling holes. i chased that exact problem in my jeep for a week and it turned out the factory ground point i was using under the dash had paint under the lug the whole time. scraped it down to bare metal and it went away completely. also make sure your power leads are twisted together where possible, it sounds old fashioned but it actually does help reduce the loop area for interference pickup.

for the bracket, i ended up just using a piece of 1/8 inch aluminum angle from the hardware store and drilling my own holes. took maybe 20 minutes and cost almost nothing. the RAM stuff is nice but not everything plays well with the Kenwood head unit dimensions.

yeah dont feel bad about the HT thing, i did the same for almost a year after i got my ticket lol. the mag mount through the door seal is probaly causing more of your issues than you think, ive seen guys get all kinds of weirdness from that. proper coax routing matters more than people give it credit for.

cant help much on the V71 bracket specifically since i run a different radio but somebody on the Kenwood users group on facebook posted a really clean 3d printed mount a few months back, might be worth searching over there if you have time
