SO2R worth it for a casual contester or just more headache than its worth

so ive been doing contests maybe 2-3 years now, mostly single op single radio, and i keep reading about SO2R guys putting up these insane numbers and im wondering if its actually the rate multiplier people claim or if its one of those things that sounds better than it is in practice

my current setup is a k3 and a spare ft-991a sitting in the corner doing nothing most of the time. i know the basics - you run on one radio, S&P or CQ on the other, try not to blow up your own front end - but actually implementing it seems like a whole project. the bandpass filter situation alone looks like it costs as much as a used radio. and then theres the SO2R box, the keyer routing, the logging software integration... N1MM makes it look manageable but ive never actually seen someone demo it in person

is there like a middle ground where you get some of the rate benefit without building the full setup? or is it really all or nothing. asking because i have a county sweep coming up and wondering if i should just focus on operating better with one radio first

honest answer - for a casual contester the juice probably isnt worth the squeeze right off the bat. the filter situation is real, you need good isolation or youll have one radio stomping all over the other and youll spend half the contest troubleshooting instead of making QSOs. i ran a half-assed SO2R setup for a whole SS before i got proper bandpass filters and it was genuinely miserable, kept losing my run frequency because id key up on the second radio and it would trip my ALC on the first one

that said, there IS a middle ground a lot of people dont talk about: just use the second radio passively for band monitoring. dont transmit on it at all. just have it tuned to where the action is on another band so you can jump over the second you hear a good opening. you get maybe 20% of the SO2R benefit with zero of the RF interaction headaches. honestly thats what i did for the first year and it helped my mult total a lot without the complexity

full SO2R with a k3 and a 991a is going to be weird anyway because theyre not really matched in capability. if you go down that road eventually youd probably want two of the same rig or at least something with comparable filtering. the k3 will walk all over the 991a in a crowded band situation

yeah what he said about passive monitoring is underrated. i did my first cqww just listening to 10m on a second radio while running 20m and caught a JA opening i would have completely missed otherwise, ended up being like 15 extra mults in one pile

for the county sweep specifically though SO2R is probably overkill - that contest rewards knowing the exchange and being organized more than raw rate. get your county list sorted, know which ones are rare, work those first when theyre fresh and not buried. thats gonna do more for your score than any hardware setup
