first big contest season coming up - what should i actually try for?

so im about 8 months into the hobby and ive been hearing a lot about CQ WW coming up and also ARRL Sweepstakes and i honestly dont even know where to start. like i have a basic HF setup, just an IC-7300 and a wire dipole in the backyard, nothing fancy. my license is general so i have HF privileges but ive never actually sat down for a real contest before.

i did Field Day this summer with my local club which was a blast and got me hooked on the idea of operating for points and exchanging info with a bunch of stations. but that felt kind of low pressure because everyone was helping out. doing it solo feels different.

i also keep seeing people mention SOTA activations and wondered if thats kind of in the same category as contesting or more its own thing. someone at the club meeting mentioned there are SOTA chasers who can pick up a ton of contacts during big events but i didnt fully understand how that fits in.

anyway i guess my main question is - for someone with my setup is CQ WW even worth trying or is it going to be frustrating? should i aim for something smaller first or just jump in

jump in, seriously. CQ WW is actually a great first solo contest experience precisely because there are SO many stations on the air. like with an IC-7300 and a dipole you will absolutely make contacts, dont let anyone tell you otherwise. the hardest part is just learning the rhythm of the exchange and not panicking when a pileup forms on you unexpectedly.

what i'd suggest is start by search and pouncing - just tune around and answer other peoples CQs rather than sitting on a frequency and calling yourself. way less pressure, you can take your time with each exchange, and you still rack up contacts and multipliers. CQ WW counts DXCC entities and zones as multipliers so even working a few rare ones feels genuinely exciting.

SOTA is kind of its own world but it does intersect with contesting sometimes. during things like the SOTA on the Air event you can chase activators for points, and during CQ WW some activators will actually go up a summit specifically to get the summit to summit contacts. its not required knowledge for your first contest though, dont overwhelm yourself.

honestly the best thing you can do is just try it for even two or three hours. log what you can, see how it feels. nobody is judging a single op with a dipole

yeah what he said. i remember my first CQ WW being kinda overwhelming but in a good way. just having the band absolutely packed wall to wall is something you dont really experience outside of contest weekends and it kind of shows you what HF can actually do.

one thing i'll add - download N1MM+ before the weekend if you havent already. even if you only make 50 contacts it keeps your log clean and handles the dupe checking automatically so you dont waste time working the same station twice. took me way too long to figure that out my first time lol
