vanity callsign question - how does the whole process actually work?

ok so i just passed my general a few weeks ago and got my sequential callsign assigned automatically which is fine but ive been looking into vanity calls and honestly the whole thing is kind of confusing to me. like i understand you apply through the FCC ULS system but theres a whole waiting period thing and something about application windows? i read a few different things online that kind of contradicted each other and now im more confused than when i started lol

my main question is - does everyone who applies for the same vanity call get thrown into a pool and then one person is picked randomly, or is it literally first come first served? and does your license class affect your chances at all or is it purely luck once youre in the window? i was hoping to maybe get a 2x1 or at least a 1x2 but i dont even know if those are realistic for a brand new general

also is there a site that tracks which calls are available or coming up available? i saw something called ae7q mentioned somewhere but wasnt sure if thats still a thing people use

yeah ae7q.com is definitely still the go-to for checking call availability, super useful site. the guy who runs it does a great job keeping it updated. you can look up specific calls and see if theyre available, when a previously held call might come back into the pool, all that stuff.

as for how the process works - so basically when you apply for a vanity call, theres a filing window that opens and stays open for a few days (i think its like 4 days if i remember right but double check that). anyone who applies during that window gets considered equally, its not first come first served within that window. after the window closes the FCC processes everyone who applied and if there were multiple applicants for the same call it goes by a priority system. your license class does matter - higher class gets priority over lower class for the same call. so an extra applying for a call beats out a general applying for the same call. within the same class i believe its essentially random if there are ties.

for a 2x1 as a general you might have a harder time since those tend to be popular and extras get first dibs. 1x2 or 2x2 might be more realistic depending on your district. honestly just poke around ae7q for a while, youll get a feel for whats out there

went through this whole thing last year, it took me forever to figure out too. one thing i'd add is that calls from recently silent keys or people who let their license lapse dont become available immediately - theres like a 2 year waiting period before a callsign goes back into the pool, sometimes longer depending on the situation. so if you had your eye on a specific call that belonged to someone recently it might be a while.

also the FCC system can be a little clunky to navigate at first but once you do it once its not bad. just make sure your license is in good standing before you apply, had a friend who had a minor address discrepancy in ULS and it caused his application to get kicked back which was annoying
