when do you actually have to use phonetics vs just saying the letter

so ive been on HF for about 8 months now and i notice some guys always go full NATO phonetics for everything and some guys just say the letter like they'll say 'W-7' instead of 'Whiskey-7' and i cant figure out if theres an actual rule for this or if its just preference. like on a clear local contact does it really matter? i always feel a little dumb going full alpha bravo charlie when the band is totally clear and we can hear each other fine. but then i also dont want to be that guy who does it wrong when it matters. is there a set standard or is it really just situational

honestly its mostly situational and nobody is going to come after you for dropping phonetics on a crystal clear sideband contact. the whole point of the NATO alphabet is that those specific words were chosen because they sound distinct even through a bunch of noise and compression and stuff. Lima sounds nothing like India, Alpha sounds nothing like Kilo, thats the whole design. so when conditions are bad or youre working DX or doing a net check-in where the net control is copying a hundred callsigns, yeah you want the full phonetics every time. but two guys chatting on a repeater with full quieting? just say what feels natural. where people get into trouble is they get lazy and start inventing their own phonetics which is a whole other problem. heard a guy say 'N as in Nancy' last week and i had to ask him to repeat because i wasnt sure if he said N or M at first. stick to the standard when you use them, even if you dont always use them

yeah what he said. i will add that contest operating basically drills the phonetics into you whether you want it or not because youre copying so many calls back to back. after a few weekends of that it just becomes automatic and you end up using them more than you probably need to in normal qsos. i actually had to consciously dial it back because my wife said i sounded like a robot when we first started chatting on the radio lol
