kinda embarrassed to ask but what do you actually say when joining a net

so ive been licensed about 4 months now (general class) and ive been listening to the local tuesday night 2m net for like 6 weeks but i still havent checked in because honestly i dont really know what youre supposed to say and i dont want to mess it up in front of everyone

like i know you wait for net control to ask for check-ins and then you give your callsign but is there anything else you say? do you say your name and location every time or just the first time? and what if you have traffic - do you announce that right away or wait til net control asks?

also someone told me you should always say your callsign phonetically but ive heard plenty of people on there just say it normally and nobody seems to care. is that a rule or just a suggestion

i know this is probably super basic stuff but i figure better to ask here than make a fool of myself on the air

dont be embarrassed at all, everyone was new once and honestly the fact that youve been listening for weeks before jumping in shows good instincts - thats exactly what youre supposed to do

for most informal local nets you really just wait for net control to say something like "are there any check-ins" and then you key up and say your callsign. some nets want phonetics, some dont care, just follow what the other people are doing and youll fit right in. if you have traffic you can say something like "[callsign] with traffic" after your call so net control knows to come back to you later.

name and location varies by net - some nets specifically ask for it, others just want the callsign. again just listen to what everyone else does for the first couple check-ins and copy that format. honestly net control has heard every possible variation and they are not going to judge you. just key up and do it, the first time is the hardest and after that it feels completely natural

yeah i was terrified my first check-in too lol. i literally wrote out what i was going to say on a notecard and had it sitting next to the radio. no shame in that. the net control on our local net was super nice about it when i fumbled and just came back to me and said go ahead take your time. most net control operators have been doing it forever and they genuinely want new people to check in, its not some exclusive club
