bands have been wild lately - anyone else noticing this?

so ive been watching the solar flux numbers creep up over the past few weeks and honestly the 10m and 12m openings have been something else. had a random tuesday afternoon last week where i just happened to be tuning around on 10 and it was absolutely packed with south american stations, europe coming in strong, even caught a couple JA's before it faded out. wasnt even a contest weekend or anything

i know were heading into solar cycle 25 and the predictions keep getting revised upward which is exciting but i never really understood how to read the flux index in a practical way like okay its 180 something today but what does that actually tell me about whether ill hear anything useful on the higher bands vs just relying on DXmaps or the cluster. anyone have a good way they use the flux numbers day to day

yeah the flux index thing confused me for a long time too when i was starting out. the short version of how i think about it is anything above like 150 and 10m starts getting interesting, above 200 and you can basically count on it being open to somewhere useful during daylight hours. below 100 and honestly dont bother unless youre really patient or chasing something specific on 15

what i actually check more than the raw SFI is the planetary A and K indexes because even with good flux if theres a geomagnetic storm going on the bands can be just garbage. had a day last month with SFI around 190 but the K index was like 5 or 6 and 10 and 15 were both just dead, static and nothing. then two days later same flux and K index back down to 1 and i worked 40 new entities in an afternoon. so yeah both numbers together give you a much better picture than either one alone

also worth looking at the DX bulletin if you dont already, they put out weekly propagation forecasts that are actually written in plain english and not just raw numbers

omg yes 10m has been insane i worked my first ever ZL last week just totally by accident i wasnt even trying to do DX i was just seeing if the antenna was working lol. this whole solar maximum thing is pretty new to me i only got my ticket in so ive never really seen the bands when theyre actually good. is this what it was like back in like 2013 or whenever the last peak was
