worth grinding for the Extra or just stick with General?

so ive had my General for about 14 months now and honestly i mostly just do HF, some FT8 and occasional SSB on 40m and 20m. a buddy at the club keeps bugging me to go for the Extra and i started looking at the question pool and... yeah. some of that stuff is pretty heavy. the math on the filter theory and transmission line stuff is no joke

i guess my question is whether its actually worth it practically speaking or if its more of a pride thing. like are there segments of the bands i actually cant get to with General that i would really miss. i dont do contesting or anything like that, mostly just casual ragchewing and digital modes when the bands cooperate

also how long did people actually spend studying before they felt ready to sit for it

honestly for pure day to day operating the difference isnt huge but i will say the Extra segments on 40 and 20 do get a little less crowded, especially during contests when the General portion of the band turns into a wall of noise. thats when i noticed it most after i upgraded

the theory stuff in the exam is actually pretty interesting once you get into it, like the filter Q and impedance matching questions make a lot more sense when you start messing with antenna tuners and understanding why certain things behave the way they do. i used the HamStudy app and just did like 20-30 questions a day for about 6 weeks and felt solid. some of the phase angle math took me a bit longer to really get versus just memorizing it

if youre even a little curious i'd just go for it. worst case you learn a bunch of stuff

I took mine last spring after putting it off forever and the exam was honestly less scary than I expected. The question pool is big but a lot of it repeats the same concepts just worded differently. The operating privledges on 75m SSB were the main thing for me since our local net runs down there and I could never check in properly before.
