jumped into my first net last night and honestly had no idea what i was doing

so i finally worked up the nerve to check in to our local 2m club net last night and wow i was way more nervous than i expected. i've been licensed for about 4 months now and mostly just been listening and doing some simplex with my buddy down the road. anyway the net control called for check ins and i just froze for like a solid 5 seconds before finally giving my callsign and it came out kind of stumbled and i forgot to give my name and location like everyone else was doing.

net control was super nice about it and asked me to repeat and it all worked out fine but i'm still kind of embarrassed. my question is basically -- is there like a standard format i should know before i do this again? i noticed some people said their callsign then name then city and some just said callsign and name and i couldnt really figure out what the expected thing was. also when do you actually talk during a net, like after you check in are you supposed to wait for them to call on you specifically or can you just jump in if theres a topic being discussed?

i know this is probably obvious to everyone here but i genuinely had no idea and i dont want to make a mess of it next time

oh man this brings back memories, my first net check-in i actually keyed up while net control was still talking and caused this horrible squeal and wanted to disappear forever lol. you did fine honestly, fumbling your first check-in is basically a rite of passage.

as for the format thing, it really does vary by net. most around here want callsign, name, and location but some just want the call. best thing to do is listen to a few full nets before you check in so you can hear the pattern. usually the net preamble will actually tell you what they want -- the net control reads it out at the start -- but its easy to miss if youre nervous.

and yeah for traffic nets or directed nets you really do wait for net control to call on you specifically before transmitting. some nets have open discussion periods where you can jump in but even then most people wait for a pause and give their call before speaking. when in doubt just wait, nobody's going to think less of you for being patient.

honestly same boat as you, checked into my first net about two months ago. what helped me was i actually wrote out a little script on a notepad before the net started. something like "[callsign], [name], [city], no traffic" so i could just read it when the time came. felt a little silly but it worked and i didnt blank out. once ive done it a few times now it feels more natural but that first few times having it written down was a lifesaver.
