when exactly do you know a band is actually open vs just wishful thinking

so ive been chasing some DX on 17m and 15m lately and i keep second guessing myself on whether the band is actually open or if im just hearing some weak signals that arent going anywhere. like yesterday i was watching the solar flux and it was up around 160 or so which i thought was pretty decent, and pskreporter was showing some spots coming in from europe but when i actually tried calling nothing came back. spent maybe 45 minutes just calling into the void before i gave up.

is there like a reliable way to tell if conditions are good enough to actually make a contact or do you just kind of feel it out over time? i know about DXmaps and stuff but even those can be misleading sometimes. the kp index was pretty low that day too so i wasnt expecting aurora or anything messing things up. just genuinely confused about what i was missing

honestly yeah it takes a while to develop a feel for it and even then the bands will still surprise you. solar flux around 160 is solid but that alone doesnt tell you much about the actual path to wherever youre trying to work. a lot of it comes down to timing too, like 15m to europe from north america has a pretty specific window usually around your late morning into early afternoon depending on where you are. if you were trying in the afternoon your time that path was probably already closing up even with decent flux numbers.

what i usually do is listen for a minute or two before calling, like actually listen. if youre hearing stations working each other with decent signal reports thats a much better sign than just seeing spots on a cluster. spots can be from guys running a kilowatt into a beam and you might be sitting there with 100w and a dipole wondering why nobody hears you. nothing wrong with that setup but expectations have to match reality. keep at it, 17m especially has been doing some really nice things this year with the cycle picking up

same thing happened to me a few weeks back, I was SO sure 15 was open based on the cluster and then just nothing. Turned out I was like an hour past the good window for that path. DX Atlas is pretty handy for figuring out when your greyline lines up with wherever you're trying to reach, if you havent tried that yet its worth messing around with
