Winlink setup - RMS gateway keeps dropping my sessions mid-transfer

so ive been trying to get Winlink Express working properly for a few weeks now and its mostly fine but i keep running into this issue where ill connect to an RMS gateway, start transferring a message, and then the session just dies partway through. im running vara HF on a IC-7300 with a signalink, and my dial frequency is set correctly as far as i can tell. the weird thing is it happens more with some gateways than others - like theres one about 80 miles from me that works maybe 60% of the time but anything further just seems to fall apart before the handshake even completes.

ive checked my audio levels probably a dozen times, ALC is staying where it should be, and im not seeing any obvious RF issues. the gateway im connecting to shows up in the RMS list as active. is there something in the Winlink Express settings for session timeout or retry behavior that i should be tweaking? or is this just kind of... how vara HF works sometimes when band conditions are mediocre? running 40m mostly, occasionally 20m in the afternoons.

also side question - is there a way to see more detail about why a session dropped, like actual error logging somewhere in Winlink Express? the messages it gives you are pretty vague.

yeah the session drop thing is frustrating, been there. a few things to check - first, vara HF is pretty sensitive to audio chain stuff, like even small levels of background noise coming in through the signalink can mess up the handshake. go into vara FM/HF settings and run the calibration if you havent already, and make sure your receive audio isnt clipping anywhere in the chain. the waterfall in vara should look clean with a fairly flat noise floor.

the other thing is that some RMS gateways honestly just have spotty uptime or are running on older hardware, so connecting to one that shows as active doesnt always mean it'll hold a full session. i usually look at the gateway's recent activity in the RMS list - if it hasnt had a successful connect in like 6+ hours during normal band hours, i skip it. also check if the gateway supports the vara bandwidth youre trying to use, some of the older ones are configured for narrower modes and if youre trying to push 2300hz bandwidth at them it might cause issues.

for logging, there actually is a session log - look in the Winlink Express menu under tools or help, i forget exactly where but theres a log folder and the session logs are in there as text files. they're not super detailed but they do at least tell you where in the handshake it bailed.

40m in the afternoon can be rough for that kind of distance depending on where you are, propagation on 40 during the day is kind of weird for medium distances - too short for skip, not ideal for groundwave either. might be worth trying 80m for the closer gateway if your antenna works there, ive had way better luck on 80 for regional stuff especially once the sun goes down a bit.

also i dunno if this applies but i had a similar droppy situation a while back and it turned out my computer was going into some kind of USB power saving mode and killing the signalink mid-session. annoying to track down but disabling USB selective suspend fixed it completely. probably not your issue but worth ruling out.
