finally decided to go for my license, where do i even start

so ive been interested in ham radio for like two years now and keep putting it off but my neighbor just got his technician and now im actually serious about doing it. the problem is i dont really know where to start. i looked up the FCC part and that was confusing, someone at work said i need to take a test but i dont know if i have to take a class first or if i can just study on my own. is there like a standard way people do this or does it vary? also how hard is the test actually, im not great at memorizing stuff but im decent with technical things if that matters

honestly the technician exam is pretty manageable if you put in a couple weeks of studying. the question pool is public - all 423 questions are available ahead of time and the actual test pulls 35 from that pool, so you're not going in blind. HamStudy.org is what most people recommend and it's free, just does flashcard style practice and tracks what you're getting wrong. some folks also like the Gordon West books if you want something physical to read through.

you dont need a class, you can absolutely self study. once you feel ready you just find a VE session near you through the ARRL website, pay the small exam fee (its like 15 bucks now i think), and show up. if you pass they submit your info to the FCC and your callsign shows up in the database within a few days. the technical stuff like ohms law and basic antenna theory might trip some people up but if you already understand electronics at least a little youll be fine

i was in the same spot about 8 months ago lol. i just used HamStudy every day on my lunch break for like 3 weeks and passed first try. the questions about electrical safety and FCC rules felt kind of dry but just keep doing practice exams until youre consistently hitting 80% or above and youre probably ready. the real test felt easier than the practice ones honestly, maybe nerves make you study harder. good luck
