confused about the vanity callsign process - is it really just luck?

so i just passed my general last month and got my sequential call which is fine but its kind of long and clunky for cw honestly. a friend at the club told me i should look into getting a vanity call but i went to the ULS and kind of got overwhelmed by the whole thing. like do i just pick whatever i want and hope nobody else applied for the same one? and how does the window system work exactly - i saw something about a 30 day window but then also something about sequential windows for different license classes and i dont totally understand how those overlap

also is there a way to know ahead of time if a specific call i want is even available or do i just have to wait and see after i apply? ive been eyeing a 2x1 in my district but im not sure if thats realistic for a general or if i need to be extra class first. appreciate any help, still pretty new to all this

yeah the window system tripped me up too when i first went through it. basically when a callsign becomes available there are sequential application windows - first window is for Amateur Extra class only, then if nobody grabs it in that window it opens up to Advanced (though thats pretty rare now since they stopped issuing those), then General, then Technician. each window is like a couple days i think, and if multiple people apply in the same window it goes to a random drawing among those applicants. so its not pure luck but theres definitely a lottery element if the call is desirable.

for your question about 2x1 calls - yeah those are extra class only in most cases, at least for the initial window. so if you want one of those bad enough it might be worth going for your extra. 2x2 calls are more achievable as a general though. and yes you can check if a specific call is available on the FCC ULS site, just search the callsign and if it shows as unassigned or cancelled you can look up when it becomes available. ae7q.com is honestly way better for this though, it has a whole vanity call tracking system that shows upcoming available calls and when each window opens. go check that out before you do anything on the FCC site

ae7q dot com is your best friend here, seriously. i spent like two hours on the FCC site getting nowhere and then someone pointed me to ae7q and it all made sense. you can actually search for calls you want and see exactly what window theyre in and when you can apply. i got my vanity last year as a general and ended up with a pretty clean 2x2 so its definitely doable without extra class, just depends on what youre after
