winlink setup - RMS gateway keeps dropping my connection halfway through

so ive been messing with Winlink for about three weeks now and i finally got Winlink Express installed and talking to my IC-7300 through the soundcard interface, vara HF trial version. the problem is i can connect to a gateway fine, it handshakes, starts pulling down headers, and then just... drops. sometimes i get one or two messages through but longer ones always seem to fail partway. im on 40m mostly trying to hit the K4MSU-10 gateway and a couple others in my region.

not sure if this is a VARA thing (since im on the free/trial mode with the speed cap) or if its my audio levels being off or what. ive gone through the setup guide on the winlink.org site like twice and i think my levels are okay but honestly its hard to tell. the waterfall looks decent to me. anyone dealt with this kind of mid-session dropout before? is there like a log file i can check to see whats actually failing

yeah the VARA trial mode will absolutely do this to you, the speed cap in the free version causes some really weird behavior especially if the gateway on the other end is expecting a cleaner faster session. i went through the same thing for like two weeks before i just bought the VARA HF license and most of my issues went away overnight. its like 69 bucks or something, not cheap but honestly if youre serious about winlink its worth it.

that said, check your audio drive levels first - in Winlink Express there's a built in level meter and you want to be sitting around 60% on the input, not pegged. if youre clipping even a little it'll cause weird dropouts that look like RF issues but arent. also try a closer gateway, K4MSU might just be marginal copy from your location depending on conditions that day. the RMS list in the program will show you signal reports if you poke around.

check the session log, its under the menu somewhere in winlink express, i forget exactly where but its there. it'll show you the actual error codes from the RMS side which makes it a lot easier to figure out if its your end or theirs. had a gateway once that was just flaky on its own and i wasted like a weekend thinking it was my setup before i tried a different one and it worked first try.
