bands have been kinda weird lately - anyone else noticing this?

so ive been trying to work some DX the past couple weeks and the conditions have just been all over the place. like one morning i'll get on 17m and work a bunch of Europeans no problem, then the next day at the same time its completely dead. i've been checking the solar flux index on the NOAA site and it's been bouncing around a lot, hovering somewhere in the 140s-150s range lately which i thought would be decent but honestly hard to predict whats gonna happen day to day.

i'm running about 100w into a dipole up maybe 25 feet so nothing fancy, but i've worked DX before on this setup just fine. is there something about the current solar cycle that makes things more unpredictable or is this normal for where we are right now? i've only been licensed about 2 years so i don't have a lot of experience to compare it to. someone on my local repeater mentioned something about a geomagnetic storm messing things up but i wasnt sure if thats a separate thing from the solar flux number.

yeah geomagnetic storms are definitely a separate thing from the flux number. the solar flux (SFI) is basically a measure of solar radio emissions and it gives you a rough idea of how ionized the F layer is - higher number generally means better conditions on the higher bands. but a geomagnetic storm, measured by the K-index or A-index, is when the earth's magnetic field gets rattled by a coronal mass ejection or a solar wind stream, and that can completely kill the higher bands even when the SFI is looking great. its kind of frustrating honestly because you can have a flux of 160 and still have 20m sounding like a wet blanket if the K-index spikes to 4 or 5.

i'd suggest bookmarking DXWatch or even just the DX cluster and also checking the space weather alerts on NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. once you start correlating what you hear on the bands with the actual indices it starts to make more sense. we're in cycle 25 and the peak has been coming in higher than a lot of people expected, so there's definitely more variability than we saw a few years ago during the bottom of the cycle.

same boat as you honestly, been licensed about 18 months and propagation stuff kind of makes my head spin still. what i started doing was just leaving PSKreporter open when im on the air, that way i can actually see who's decoding me and get a feel for whats open without just guessing. 17m has been really hit or miss for me too but i had a sick opening last tuesday afternoon into Japan on 15m out of nowhere, worked like 6 JA stations in a row which was a first for me. so yeah it's weird but also sometimes just random good stuff happens when you least expect it lol
